Here are some hints to help the environment and save you money on home energy use.
Tips with a star are low-cost and the easy to implement
Electric
Turn off the light when you leave a room. If you have kids, make sure they follow your example.
Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with flourescent lights will reduce your electric bill. Look for rebates on your purchase of flourescent lights.
If your utility company has "time of use" rates, consider appliances that can be programmed to run off peak hours.
Heating
Replace your air filter every couple of months with a new "easy flow" filter. A dirty filter reduces air flow and the time to heat your home.
Have your furnaced serviced annually. If your furnace is working at peak efficiency it will use less energy and cost less to operate.
Lower your thermostat, particularly at night. Wear heavier pajamas to bed or use an extra blanket.
Install a programmable thermostat to allow for lower settings when no one is home and to turn the heat on prior to anyone returning.
Windows and Doors
Apply weather-stripping between the fixed and movable sections of doors and windows.
Apply a sealant or caulk around windows, doorframes, sills and joints. On a windy day feel for leaks to identify leaks around windows.
Replace your older windows with energy efficient replacement windows.
Use plastic window covers to help prevent heat loss.
Keep return air grills and heating vents clear of furniture, rugs and drapes, so there is no interference.
During heating season, open blinds on the south facing side of your house so the sun shines in. At night shut blinds and drapes.
Hot Water Usage
Switch to cold when doing your laundry. Most of the energy used to wash your clothes is used to heat the water. Wash full loads.
Choose a front loading washing machine. Not only does a front loading washing machine save water, it saves energy as well. It uses less water and energy.
Always wash a full load in your dishwasher and air-dry your dishes on the “energy saver” setting.
Install low-flow showerheads and faucets.
Fireplace
Close the damper to prevent warm air from escaping through the chimney.
Close your fireplace by adding a wood or pellet stove insert.
